The present invention relates to an LCD backlight unit including a switching function. The present invention relates to an LCD backlight unit including a switching function which can actively control the transmission, scattering, and reflection of a portion of light cast from the light source and thus implements a scanning function and local dimming technology which cannot be implemented by typical backlight units. The LCD backlight unit including the switching function according to the present invention comprises: a light source generating light; a reflector plate reflecting the light which travels from the light source to the liquid crystal panel; a prismatic sheet guiding the travel path of the light incident into a certain area of the liquid crystal panel; and an active diffuser plate disposed between the reflector plate and the prismatic sheet and controlling the selective transmission of the incident light. The active diffuser plate comprises a first transparent substrate patterned to form a transparent electrode, a liquid crystal capsule layer in which a liquid capsule and a binder are mixed and printed on one surface of the first transparent substrate, and a second transparent substrate stacked on one surface of the liquid crystal capsule layer and patterned to form the transparent electrode. The active diffuser plate selectively drives the plurality of liquid crystal capsules through the control of power applied to the transparent electrode pattern to change the liquid crystal arrangement, thus controlling the selective transmission of incident light.
