SILICON NITRIDE SINTERED COMPACT AND ABRASION RESISTANT MEMBER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a silicon nitride sintered compact and an abrasion resistant member in which peeling of the surface caused by fatigue due to a repeated load is reduced and which therefore have improved dimensional accuracy when subjected to surface working, and also have excellent abrasion resistance and durability.

SOLUTION: The silicon nitride sintered compact is obtained by molding and sintering a mixture containing silicon nitride and a sintering aid comprising Al2O3and Y2O3. The sintered compact has bulk density of ≥3.1 g/cm3, has an average crystal grain size of ≤3 μm, and has no defects of ≥10 μm and snow flakes of ≥20 μm up to a depth of 250 μm from the surface.
