<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a redox flow battery capable of maintaining necessary battery capacity in a short time by mixing one of electrolyte of a positive electrode or a negative electrode with the other electrolyte by a desired quantity in order to adjust a temperature of the electrolyte or charging state, and to provide a method of operating the same. <P>SOLUTION: The redox flow battery 1A includes a battery cell 2, a positive electrode tank 31 in which a positive electrode electrolyte is stored, a negative electrode tank 41 in which a negative electrode electrolyte is stored, a positive electrode electrolyte circulation passage 3, and a negative electrode electrolyte circulation passage 4. A supply pipe 51 is connected to both electrode tanks 31, 41, and one end of the supply pipe 51 is open to the liquid in one of the tanks and the other end is open to the air in the other tank.
