[Also in Division B8] In a method of conveying sheet material supported by gas under pressure from a region 1, Fig. 2, below the sheet material, the path is inclined to one side so that the material slides into engagement with conveying means. In one example the conveying means comprises parallel endless cables 21A, 21B, 21C carrying spaced brackets 35 supporting the sides of the sheets and having skids which slide along the surface of the plenum chamber 1 to support the brackets. The cables are driven from pulleys at opposite ends of the conveyer and which may be selectively removed to one side so that only one cable is used when wider sheets extend across the whole width. In a modification the sheets are engaged by cranked members (158), Fig. 8 (not shown), pivotally attached to spaced brackets (156) on an endless chain (121). The members (158) have a vertical position (159) at which they are ineffective to engage the sheets and have a horizontal position (160) to which they are selectively moved by an air cylinder (161) for engagement with the sides of the sheets. This arrangement is particularly for use with circular sheets so that selected members may be arranged to engage and locate the sheets and are correctly spaced according to the size of sheet. |
