A light emitting device which is thin and has high light extraction efficiency. A light emitting device is provided with a base which is provided with a recess having a bottom surface and a side wall; an electricity conducting member which has an upper surface exposed at the bottom surface of the recess and also has a lower surface for forming the outer surface of the light emitting device; a protrusion which is provided within the recess; a light emitting element which is mounted within the recess and is electrically connected to the electricity conduction member; and a sealing member which is provided within the recess so as to cover the light emitting element. The base consists of a resin from which the bottom surface and the side wall are formed integrally. The recess has a curved surface provided on the inner surface of the side wall. The protrusion is provided close to the curved surface. As a result of the configuration, the light emitting device has high light extraction efficiency and reliability and is thin and compact.
