PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aqueous dispersion containing a hollow polymer particle, which provides filler-containing paper having high whiteness and opacity and has high dispersion stability when applied to filler-containing paper and a method for producing the aqueous dispersion. SOLUTION: The method for producing an aqueous dispersion containing a hollow polymer particle includes a step for polymerizing or copolymerizing a monomer composed of 97-100 mass% of a monoethylenic unsaturated monomer and 3-0 mass% of an acidic group-containing polymer or a monomer mixture (c) in the presence of a core polymer particle (A) enclosed by an intermediate layer (B) using a specific surfactant and forming an outer layer (C) substantially enclosing the intermediate layer (B) and further performing a step for mixing the aqueous dispersion with a water-soluble cationic resin.
