A shifting device of a motor vehicle manual transmission comprises a selector lock (5), which is positively effective and used to prevent an axial displacement of a selector shaft (1) into an outer shift gate (44) depending on the operation. A selector lock (5) comprises a locking ring (6), which is mounted coaxially with respect to the selector shaft (1) so as to be axially displaceable and rotatable, comprises an axially inner stop surface (8) having at least one locking tooth (9) axially protruding around the outer shift gas distance (X) and an axially outer locking surface (10), and which, by way of a linear spring, is held in an axial resting position in which an axial displacement (16) of the selector shaft (1) in the direction of the outer shift gate (44) results in a contact of a stop surface (12) of the selector shaft (1) with the locking tooth (9), at the latest when the shift gate (42) second toward the inside is reached, and starting from which a further axial displacement of the selector shaft (1) results in a contact of the locking surface (10) of the locking ring (6) with a locking surface (11) stationary on the housing when the next shift gate (43) toward the inside is reached. The locking ring is held by means of a torsion spring in a peripheral resting position, in which a rotation (17) of the selector shaft (1) results in an axial engagement of the locking tooth (9) of the locking ring (6) in an axial recess (13, 14) in the stop surface (12) of the selector shaft (1) when a shifting position of at least one gear (G5, G6) of the next shift gate (43) toward the inside is reached.
