The method involves activating and opening a portion of outlet valves (16) for supporting an exhaust gas turbine (20b) of a switching exhaust turbocharger (18,20). The switching exhaust turbocharger is impacted durably with a gas volume in an operating method. The gas volume is smaller than a basic gas volume poured into the exhaust turbocharger during a defined measure. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for operation of a combustion engine, particularly a combustion engine with sequential charger.
