The invention relates to a method for validating the stop position of an internal combustion engine in which the control system implements a strategy for determining the stop position thereof by calculating the angle covered by the engine crankshaft during consecutive periods before the stoppage thereof, characterised in that the method comprises determining, for each period in question, a reliability criterion (C) representative of the probability that a change of the crankshaft rotation direction has been correctly taken into account during the period in question, and invalidating the calculation of the covered angle if the reliability criterion (C) is lower than a predetermined threshold.
