PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an endoscope which secures a sufficient light quantity required for imaging, and has a small diameter. SOLUTION: At least a part of the endoscope 1 is introduced to the inner part of an object to be observed to image a subject inside. The endoscope includes: an illumination device 4 arranged so as to allow the normal M to face a direction which is orthogonally crossed with an introduction direction (an X-direction), and illuminating a forward part; and an imaging unit 5 arranged in parallel with the illumination device and imaging the forward part. The illumination device includes: an organic light emitting layer held between two electrodes; a light shielding part 11 for shielding a first light beam advancing in the direction of the normal among light beams emitted from the organic light emitting layer; and a light extraction part 12 arranged on the distal end side of the organic light emitting layer, extracting a second light beam L2 from the distal end, which advances in the in-plane direction of the organic light emitting layer among the emitted light beams, and emitting the light beam to the forward part.
