An automatic circuit breaker suitable for use with a measuring instrument has a push-button operating member 15 which when depressed closes main contacts 6, 7 and when released closes auxiliary contacts 26, 27 in series with the main contacts, such that the circuit cannot be kept closed by holding down the push-button, and is provided with a pivotal latching member 19 which locks the push-button while the auxiliary contacts are closed, such that the auxiliary contacts cannot be reopened by pushing the button. The push-button 15 has a stem 14 carrying a pin 13 which co-operates with a slot 12 in a lever 11 pivoted to a frame 1. Depression of the button turns lever 11 anticlockwise, its tip pushing a contact lever 8 overcentre of a tension spring 10 to engage contact 6 and drive it together with an armature 3 towards a retaining electromagnet 2. When an overload occurs the electromagnet 2 is de-energized releasing contact 6 which pushes contact 7 overcentre to open the main contacts. Contact 7 strikes member 19 pivoting it against a spring 29 to release its latching engagement with slot 17 in the stem 14 and moving its end 23 away from contact 26 to allow the auxiliary contacts to open. |
