PURPOSE: An apparatus for media recognition and method for kind and truth distinction with the same are provided to improve accuracy and correct recognition rate of the paper currency recognition. CONSTITUTION: The first and the second lighting-emitting area(13) radiate the respective ultraviolet ray in the front side and backside surface whole of media. The image sensor(14) senses the image of media in media based on the ultraviolet ray which is partially reflected and the ultraviolet ray transmitting media. The extracting unit(15) extracts the ultraviolet information of the fluorescent material formed among both sides of media in one or greater based on the detected media image. The controller(20) distinguish truth and denomination of media based on the extracted ultraviolet information. The storage stores the standards ultraviolet information of media.
