The carrier e.g. smartcard (1) has safety features (10, 11) inserted and/or attached in or on an edge surface (7) of the carrier. A card body (2) includes multi-layered structure, where the features extend over two layers of the card body. The color of the safety features differs from the color of the edge surface. The safety features are printed on the edge surface by a process e.g. inkjet printing, thermo-printing, pad printing and laser printing. One of the safety features (11) has elevations and/or slots provided relative to a surface area of the edge surface. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for manufacturing a card-shaped data carrier (2) a device for producing a safety feature on a card-shaped data carrier.
