PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing anα-hydroxy acid ester useful as a raw material of a medicine, an agrochemical, a liquid crystal and a polymer by an industrially simple operation in high purity and a high yield. SOLUTION: Thisα-hydroxy acid ester can be produced in high purity and high yield by the simple operation that after esterifying anα-hydroxy acid by using a same alcohol for a raw material as the reaction solvent in the presence of an acid catalyst, the acid catalyst is neutralized by adding a volatile base, and then the reaction solvent is distilled off.
