<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a locking device built into a stile, which enables locking and unlocking operations to be performed by such a natural motion that an indoor-side operation member is moved downward or upward, and which enables the sure and smooth performance of locking and unlocking; and to provide a sash window equipped with the locking device. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In this locking device built into the stile, an arc-shaped engaging plate 21A of a latch 21 of a lock body 11 housed in an inner meeting stile of an indoor-side sash is operated from an indoor side ID by means of the operation member, so as to protrude from/recede into the inner meeting stile, and engaged with an engaging piece of a retainer in an outer meeting stile of an outdoor-side sash, so as to bring about a locked state. The lock body 11 comprises: a gear section 21B which is formed on the other side of the arc-shaped engaging plate 21A across its rotational supporting shaft S2; a small-diameter gear 14B which is supported by a rotational supporting shaft S1 so as to mesh with the gear section 21B; a large-diameter gear 14A which is rotated integrally with the small-diameter gear 14B; and a rack 13 which is constantly meshed with the large-diameter gear 14A, connected to the operation member, and elongated in a vertical direction.
