PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel method of manufacturing carbon having a smaller specific surface area. SOLUTION: The method of manufacturing carbon comprises: a first step of polymerizing an alkylphenol with an aldehyde compound to yield a chain or crosslinked polymer; and a second step of heating the resulting polymer at 800-980°C in an inert gas atmosphere.
