The controller has an input (2) for a control voltage (Us) and an output (4) for connection of an electromechanical drive (6). A current sensor (10) is connected with the output and measures the intensity of the current (I) flowing through the drive. A switch (14) is connected with the output for interrupting the current flowing to the drive. An energy storage i.e. capacitor (16), supplies the current to the drive after omission of the control voltage. Another energy storage i.e. capacitor (20), supplies the current to a control unit (18) after omission of the control voltage. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an electromechanical drive.
