PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a document from being forgotten to be picked up, and to prevent operation from being disturbed, even when the document is placed on a display screen, by reading the document on the display screen of an operation panel by using an area sensor. SOLUTION: The document reading apparatus includes an integral display unit 401 in which an area sensor section 401b is provided integrally; a main CPU 101 for controlling the display on a screen of the integrated display unit 401; and a document placed on the screen of the integrated display unit 401 is read by the area sensor section 401b. The integral display unit 401 includes on the screen, an operation area for displaying various operating keys of the document reader, and the main CPU 101 detects an area of the document placed on the screen by the area sensor section 401b and sets an area, other than the area where the document has been placed, as an operation area of the document reader.
