PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display, equipped with an optical sensor improved in responsiveness by eliminating the detection delay of environmental light. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display 1 includes a liquid crystal display panel; a photodetecting part, having TFT optical sensors LS<SB>1</SB>, LS<SB>2</SB>formed of TFTs built in the substrate of the liquid crystal display panel that detects external light; an illuminating means for illuminating the liquid crystal display panel; a detection circuit connected to the photodetecting part; and a control means for controlling the brightness of the illuminating means, based on the output of the detection circuit. Distribution wirings L<SB>1</SB>-L<SB>3</SB>connected to gate electrodes G<SB>L1</SB>-G<SB>L6</SB>, source electrodes S<SB>L1</SB>-S<SB>L6</SB>and drain electrodes D<SB>L1</SB>-D<SB>L6</SB>of the TFT optical sensors are arranged in parallel, and the outer edge parts of the gate electrodes G<SB>L1</SB>-G<SB>L6</SB>are covered with the distribution wirings L<SB>1</SB>-L<SB>3</SB>via insulating members, in plan view, so as not to produce clearances between the gate electrodes G<SB>L1</SB>-G<SB>L6</SB>and the distribution wirings L<SB>1</SB>-L<SB>3</SB>.
