PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a support for a magnetic recording medium that prevents the occurrence of an error rate, even when a linear tape in which a reinforcing film suitable for high density recording and composed of a metal material selected from a metal, a semi-metal, an alloy, and an oxide and a composite thereof is provided and which has a magnetic layer to be a ferromagnetic metal thin film is manufactured. SOLUTION: In the support for the magnetic recording medium wherein the reinforcing filmβcomposed of at least one metal material selected from a metal, a semi-metal, an alloy and an oxide and a composite thereof is formed on a surface B on a polyester layer B side of a laminated polyester film constituted of at least two layers of a polyester layer A and the polyester layer B and which has 2 to 6μm thickness, the polyester layer B has≤0.7 mass% cyclic trimer content and a surface A on the polyester layer A side on which the magnetic layer is to be provided has 1 to 5 nm Ra.
