PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic camera, suitably controlling focusing when a photographing optical system has different characteristics. SOLUTION: The electronic camera includes: an image sensor 3; a first arithmetic means 3 for dividing light beams of an object passed through a photographing optical system 1 into two systems, and computing defocusing information based on a phase difference between two images formed by the light beams of the two systems; a second arithmetic means 4 for computing contrast evaluation value using an image signal obtained by the image sensor 3; a moving means 5 for moving forward and backward a focusing control optical system 2 of the photographing optical system 1; detecting means 10, 11, 12 for detecting the presence of a member changing the characteristics of the photographing optical system 1; and a control means 4 for determining the moving destination of the focusing control optical system 2 based on the arithmetic results of the second arithmetic means 4 when the detecting means 10, 11, 12 detect the presence of the member.
