PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device of detecting the cetane number of fuel for an internal combustion engine, properly detecting the cetane number of fuel based on retard width of injection timing in start at low temperature. SOLUTION: The device of detecting the cetane number of fuel for an internal combustion engine is suitably used for detecting the cetane number of fuel. Concretely, control is performed to retard injection timing in the start at low temperature, the retard width is acquired from the injection timing when the injection timing is retarded to approximately the utmost limit by the control, and the cetane number is detected based on the acquired retard width. In this time, if the acquired retard width is larger, it is determined that the cetane number of the fuel is relatively high. If the acquired retard width is small, it is determined that the cetane number of the fuel is relatively low. In the device of detecting the cetane number of fuel for the internal combustion engine, the cetane number is suitably detected based on the retard width of the ignition timing acquired by the retard control of the injection timing performed in the start at low temperature.
