PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video recorder which is user-friendly when set up is changed. SOLUTION: A DVD recorder 1 comprises an input section 2, an encoding section 55, a recording/reading section 4, a signal processing section 5, a control section 9, and a flash memory 99. The input section 2 comprises a receiving section 21, and a recording/reading section 4. The control section 9 comprises a subroutine for performing a set up processing section 91, a translation processing 92, an OSD processing section 93, and EPG composite processing 94. The control section 9 receives set up of language by set up processing 91. The OSD processing section 93 inputs characters for OSD in the flash memory 99. The EPG composite processing 95 inputs the character string of EPG from the signal processing section 5. A closed caption file is inputted from the input section 2 and the inputted characters are translated by calling a subroutine of the translation processing 92.
