An air displacing unit of the type having a housing 12, a fan 13,14 operated by a motor 15, an air inlet 16,17, an air outlet 20,21 and a duct 18,19 for air through the housing from the inlet to the outlet with the fan being operable to cause air to be displaced along the duct from the inlet to the outlet is movable from a stowed configuration to an operating configuration wherein its internal volume is less in the stowed configuration. The air displacing unit comprises a housing adapted for displacement between a first, standby, configuration where the projection of the housing from a datum plane, and hence internal volume, is a minimum and a second, working, configuration where the projection of the housing from the datum plane, and hence volume of, is a maximum. Movement from the stowed configuration to the operating configuration may be caused by the operation of the fan causing a chamber the fan is mounted in to expand due to an increase in air pressure. In use, the invention is particularly applicable for hand driers but is also applicable to other air moving devices such as vacuum cleaners, air conditioning units and drying apparatus for objects other than hands. |
