The control unit (9) has two on-off switches (K1, K2) e.g. MOSFETs, to supply an electrical rotating machine i.e. alternator-starter (2), with an additional voltage delivered by a secondary voltage source (6) e.g. battery, in starting mode of the machine. The voltage source is mounted in series with a main battery (4). A charging unit (7) e.g. charger, is connected to the voltage source for charging the voltage source. The switches are controlled by a slave controlling and switching unit (8) of a control and command unit (3) of the machine and activated in opposite phase. An independent claim is also included for a method of controlling an electrical rotating machine i.e. starter, of a heat engine of a motor vehicle.
