An annular element for a cartridge filter (Fig. 4, not shown) is made by folding a strip of sheet filter material longitudinally about a corrugated intercalary strip 5 (Fig. 1, not shown), pleating the resulting band (Fig. 2, not shown) and expanding (Fig. 3) so that the open edge 4 of the band lies on a cylindrical surface. An additional edge sealing strip (Fig. 6, not shown) may be included, and the band may form a complete annulus or a sector. One annulus or a plurality of annulii or sectors may be combined in one cartridge filter. The band alternatively may comprise two strips of filter material sandwiching an intercalary strip 5,the filter strips being joined along one edge. In continuous production, the intercalary strip is corrugated by fluted rollers and the ridges are glued on one side. A double width filter strip is applied and the glue cured in an oven, before glue is applied to the other side and the filter strip folded. After a second cure the band is indented on either side, braked to form pleats and cut to length. In use the cartridge is immersed in the fluid to be filtered and a partial vacuum applied within the cartridge.</p> |
