A mass spectrometer is disclosed comprising a sampling cone (3) and a con e-gas cone (4) wherein, in use, sulphur hexa fluoride ('SF6') is supplied as a cone gas (5) to the annulus between the cone-gas cone (4) and the samplin g cone (3) in order to improve the transmission of high molecular mass ions passing through the sampling cone (3) into and through subsequent stages of the mass spectrometer.
