PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a ring-opened polymer hydride which has high solubility to organic solvents, is easily handled, contains only a small amount of low molecular weight polymers generated and is excellent in mechanical strength. SOLUTION: The method for producing a ring-opened polymer hydride comprises the step of subjecting a norbornene-based monomer to ring-opening polymerization in a solution in the presence of a polymerization catalyst consisting of a transition metal compound in which a secondary or a tertiary alkylimide is coupled to a transition metal atom of group 6 of the periodic table and an organic aluminum oxy compound to obtain a ring-opened polymer, and the step of hydrogenating a carbon-carbon double bond of the obtained ring-opened polymer.
