PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve power performance, while avoiding or suppressing generation of surging. SOLUTION: A control device for an engine has a VVT mechanism 32 changing open/close timing of an intake valve 30, compares an engine revolution fluctuation widthΔNe with a surge determination threshold value to determine the generation of surge (S51), sets a value correcting an ignition timing surge correction amount TSNK to be advanced when the generation of surge is determined (S52), and ignition timing ADVS is corrected to be advanced by the ignition timing surge correction amount TSNK. Further, a value corrected to retard a VVT surge correction amount VTRN for correcting the open/close timing of the intake valve by the intake VVT mechanism 32 is set (S53), and a control current value IVT operating the intake VVT mechanism 32 is corrected to be retarded by the VVT surge correction amount VTRN.
