PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a platen retaining mechanism which enables the easy attachment and detachment of a platen by a compact and simple configuration, and has a high reliability in retaining the platen. SOLUTION: A shaft part 2a of a platen roller 2 is inserted in a notch 7 of a frame 3. An escaping direction from the notch 7 is regulated by a pawl part 8. A thermal head 2 is pressed in contact with the platen roller 2 by a spring member 4. The shaft part 2a is pressed to a predetermined retaining position in the notch 7 by an urging force applied to the platen roller 2 via a thermal head 1 from the spring member 4. When the thermal head 1 is moved against a spring force of the spring member 4, a spring member 10 swings a release arm 9 following the thermal head 1. An engagement part 9b of the release arm 9 swinging following the thermal head 1 is engaged with the shaft part 2a, pressing out the shaft part in a direction (arrow A direction) to escape from an opening of the notch 7.
