Recombinant production of antimicrobial agents

Provided is the use of a protection peptide in the recombinant expression of an antimicrobial peptide, wherein the protection peptide encompasses between 1 and 100 amino acid residues, and wherein at least 50% of the amino acid residues comprised in the protection peptide are D (Asp) and/or E (Glu). Further provided are methods for identifying protection peptides, related recombinant host cells, methods for producing antimicrobial agents and a fusion product containing an enzyme, an antimicrobial agent, a cleavable marker and the said protection peptide. Also provided are animal feeds including the said fusion product and transgenic plants producing the fusion product.
