A method for preparing 1,5-dimethyltetralin(1,5-DMT) is provided to improve selectivity and yield and to prevent the loss of a catalyst by improving the lifetime and mechanical strength of a catalyst. A method for preparing 1,5-dimethyltetralin comprises the step of cyclization of 5-o-tolyl pentene(5-OTP) in the presence of a zeolite beta catalyst which is dealuminated by SiCl4 substitution. Preferably the SiCl4 substitution is carried out at a temperature of 450-550 deg.C under nitrogen atmosphere; and the cyclization is carried out at a temperature of 80-250 deg.C.
