PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small-sized reflection type double-refractive index measuring instrument capable of simply measuring the double refractive index of a pickup optical system, a plastic lens for a portable telephone or a liquid crystal material, the angle of rotation of glucose of a living body. SOLUTION: In a double-refractive index measuring method employing a reflection type double-refractive index measuring instrument, an optical system constituted of a nonrelativistic optical system and a mirror is installed on the leading end of a plane-of-polarization preserving optical fiber, two orthogonal polarization modes are thrown on the optical fiber to be set so that the orthogonal polarization modes reciprocate through a sample to be measured and reversed in the plane-of-polarization preserving optical fiber in the planes of polarization thereof by reciprocation and the signal processing circuit of an optical fiber gyro is applied as an interferometer.
