A deinterlacing apparatus and a method thereof are provided to process an image of high quality at high speed by interpolating an interpolation target pixel using uppermost and lowermost pixel values and peripheral pixel values of the interpolation target pixel. A deinterlacing method includes several following steps: calculating a difference between a uppermost pixel value and a lowermost pixel value of an interpolation target pixel(201); comparing the difference between a uppermost pixel value and a lowermost pixel value of an interpolation target pixel with a threshold value(202); interpolating the interpolation target pixel using the uppermost pixel value and the lowermost pixel value(203) when the difference between a uppermost pixel value and a lowermost pixel value of an interpolation target pixel is equal to or less than the threshold value; and interpolating the interpolation target pixel using the uppermost pixel value and the lowermost pixel value, and peripheral pixel values of the interpolation target pixel(204) when the difference between a uppermost pixel value and a lowermost pixel value of an interpolation target pixel is greater than the threshold value.
