A method and apparatus for leak testing a hydraulic clutch actuation system

A method and apparatus for determining whether a leak is present in a Hydraulic clutch actuation system is disclosed in which the position of a master cylinder piston 52 is measured using a first position sensor 53, the position of a slave cylinder piston 62 is measured using a second position sensor 63 and the outputs are compared to determine whether there is a leak. If a leak is present in the hydraulic clutch actuation system then the position of the slave cylinder piston 62 will drop back while the position of the master cylinder piston 52 remains substantially constant. The leak detection system is designed to be used in conjunction with stop in gear stop/start engine control.
