PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for molding an optical element which is excellent in filling property and transferability when molding an optical element having a concave lens surface and by which removal amount of the material of the optical element due to post-processing is reduced. SOLUTION: When molding the optical element having the spherical concave lens surface by heating and pressing the thermoplastic material 17 of the optical element arranged between a pair of upper and lower opposed molds 12 and 13, the material 17 of the optical element is brought into contact with all the surface of a functional surface transfer range on the molding surface 12a of the upper mold 12 before the material 17 of the optical element is brought into contact with all the surface of a functional surface transfer range on the molding surface 13a of the lower mold 13 when R1<R2 is satisfied assuming that the radius of curvature of the molding surface 12a of the upper mold 12 is R1 and the radius of curvature of the molding surface 13a of the lower mold 13 is R2.
