Disclosed is a negative electrode for lithium secondary batteries which comprises a collector and an active material layer supported by the collector. The active material layer contains a plurality of columnar particles containing silicon element. The columnar particles are inclined to the normal of the collector, and the porosity P of the active material layer is not less than 10% but not more than 70% (10% <= P <= 70%). The angle R between each columnar particle and the normal of the collector is preferably not less than 100 but not more than 800 (100 <= R <= 800).
