The inner face of a thin metal sheet or foil of aluminum and/or aluminum alloy is connected to a heat resistant plastic supporting layer. The outer surface of the metal part has a decorative metallic appearance and is compressed. Ageing resistant adhesion between the plastic and metal layers is achieved with a heat and chemical resistant adhesive which is activated before plastic injection onto the metal and continues to react during the injection and during a subsequent chemical surface treatment of the metal. The metal sheet can be flat or formed in two or three dimensions and is 0.2-1mm, preferably 0.5-0.6mm thick depending on area of use. Metal sheet, which is cleaned and degreased before forming, may be either preformed or formed by tool closure or plastic injection pressure. The outer surface of the metal sheet may be chemically and/or mechanically treated, e.g. roughened, brushed, ground or polished and may have recesses or raised parts forming an embossed or design pattern or characters. The final plastic/metal composite is chemically treated to give the metal surface a glossy and/or anodic oxidized and/or colored and cold and/or hot compressed, outer surface. An independent claim is included for a process for manufacturing the decorative component in which plastic is injected onto the rear face of an adhesive-coated thin metal sheet or foil. The metal-plastic component is subjected to a chemical surface treatment to produce a decorative metal appearance and is compressed. Adhesive applied between the metal sheet and plastic is activated by heat throughout the whole process as previously described. |
