Class 114 A water jet propulsion unit for a ship comprises divergent ducts 19 through which water is entrained and pressurized, with or without the assistance of mechanical pressure raising means such as a screw 20, and a nozzle or nozzles 22 through'which a gaseous fluid is admitted as a dispersion of finely divided bubbles, the resulting mixture being then ejected through an outlet nozzle 26. The latter may be a simple convergent nozzle or a convergentdivergent nozzle. The nozzle 22 has a number of orifices 24 and is of annular form. Alternatively a system of radially extending nozzles may be provided. The screw may be used to assist at starting or for propelling astern. A hydraulic pump may be used instead of the screw. In other embodiments a single faired nozzle or a plurality of parallel nozzles are provided and the screw is omitted. Normal screw propellers are used for propelling astern. The jet propulsion unit may be used as the main propulsion means of a ship or as an auxiliary propulsion means.</p> |
