PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an extension system, an add-in card and an external device capable of preventing a link error from being generated even when the external device is connected to a host computer via the add-in card. SOLUTION: The host computer 10 is provided with an extension slot 11 of Express specification inserted with the add-in card 20. The extension device 40 is connected to the add-in card 20 via a cable 130 and connectors 131A, 131B. The extension device 40 outputs a control signal Sc from a controller 41 to bring a switch 43 into continuity, when initialization is finished under an on-state of an electric power source, brings both hot-plug detecting terminals #1, #2 of the add-in card 20 into an L-level to operate a hot-swap controller 14, issues a notification to a transceiver 13 to establish a link, and turns a switch 14a on.
