PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for cutting steels for machine structural use, capable of improving cutting capability in intermittent cut, and attaining a long tool service life by forming a protective film on a tool surface. SOLUTION: In this cutting method for the steel for machine structural use for cutting by means of intermittent cutting, the steel for machine structural use which include a predetermined quantity of C, Mn, Si, S, and Al, satisfies an expression (1): 31.6 [S mass%]+1740 [Al mass%]≥20.0, and include a prescribed quantity of at least either of Mg or Ca and the remainder comprising Fe and unavoidable impurities are cut at 50 m/min. or more of cutting speed when T1 is 0.055 sec or less if a relationship between the tool and contact time is expressed as an expression (2): T2/T1≥0.06. T1 is a mean time of contact time of the tool with the steel for machine structural use for one time and T2 is a mean time of non-contact time of the tool with the steel for machine structural use for one time.
