摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure high image quality by always directly and precisely detecting the temperature of the boundary area between a paper passage area and a paper non-passage area regardless of various factors such as the size and paper type of a recording material and moisture content, thereby preventing image defects such as fixing failure and hot offset over the entire area of paper. <P>SOLUTION: The image heating device includes a heating rotation body for heating an image on a recording material in a nip area; a blowing means having blowing ports 60L and 60R for cooling the recording-material non-passage area of the heating rotation body; movable shutter members 56L and 56R for adjusting the widths of the openings of the blowing ports; and a control means to prescribe, according to information on the size of the recording material P to be passed through the device, the paper passage area of the heating rotation body and the paper non-passage area to be cooled in the blowing ports by moving shutter members to positions corresponding to the width of a recording material to be passed. In the image heating device, the shutter members 60L and 60R are provided with temperature detecting means TH3 and TH 4 respectively. The temperature of the boundary area between the paper passage area and paper non-passage area of the heating rotation body prescribed by the movement of the corresponding shutter members is detected.
