An image rotation apparatus and method is provided to minimize memory access frequency and memory bandwidth by using vertical direction memory access and line buffer at image rotation. A line buffer(101) reads image data of a vertical direction from a memory. A line buffer address generator(102) generates an address of the line buffer required at reading/writing of the line buffer. A buffer data transfer(103) transfers the image data transmitted from DMA(Direct Memory Access), and transfers the image data transmitted from the line buffer to a data extractor(105). A line buffer controller(104) controls image rotation function, and the data extractor extracts the image data required according to a data reading sequence by the line buffer controller. A DMA(Direct Memory Access) address generator(106) generates address information and a control signal when an image data transmitting request is produced. A DMA transmission requester(107) requests image data based on the address transferred from the address generator.
