A color filter substrate and a method of fabricating the same are provided to prevent recesses or grooves from being generated in an alignment material layer during an alignment rubbing process by forming various buffer patterns at an edge of a shielding pattern layer and protecting a surface of a rubbing roller. A transparent substrate(50) including a display region(210), a peripheral region(22), and a buffer region(230) is provided. A shielding pattern layer(212) is formed in the peripheral region of the transparent substrate. A color filter layer(214) is formed in the display region. At least one buffer pattern(224) is formed in the buffer region. An alignment material layer is formed so as to cover at least a portion of the color filter layer and the shielding pattern layer. An alignment rubbing process is performed on the alignment material layer from the buffer pattern.
