To check the accuracy of summary cards punched at each group change in a tabulator, the detail cards are passed through the tabulator a second time and the values in the accumulator are compared at the end of each group with the values sensed from the summary card in an auxiliary card feeding and sensing machine. This check is made when the grand total on the tabulator and the total in an accumulator on the summary punch differ and it becomes necessary to discover which summary card is wrongly punched. If the comparison on the individual summary card shows agreement, the next group of cards is fed through the tabulator and the next summary card is sensed in the auxiliary machine. If there is disagreement, a summary punch makes a new summary card. The system is shown diagrammatically in the Figure. The detail cards 108 from hopper 101 pass through the tabulator sensing brushes 109, 110 which detect group change and initiate total-taking. The summary cards 104 are placed in a hopper 102 of the auxiliary machine and blank cards 105 are placed in the hopper of a summary punch. At a group change the group change detector sends a signal to the accumulators 111 to make the usual total taking operation and it also sends a signal to a cycle control unit 112 which starts a cycle of operations in the auxiliary machine. This causes the summary card 104 corresponding to the card group just ended to be fed through the sensing station 14 and the data compared in the comparator 113 with the values in the accumulators 111. For this purpose an emitter operating in synchronism with the card-sensing causes selective energization of the first coils of differentially wound relays the other coils of which are connected to be energized by the read-out from the accumulators 111 through commutators UC1, UC2, UC3. Where the data signals from both the card 104 and the appropriate accumulator 111 are the same the relays do not respond. A difference causes the relays to operate. Where there is agreement the next operation of the cycle causes the accumulators to be reset ready and detail cards to be fed for the next checking operation. In the case of disagreement, the re-starting of the tabulator is prevented and punching unit is started over magnet PMC to punch into a blank 105 the data set up in the accumulator and passed to punch selector magnets PM1- PM3. This new summary card is visually compared with the original summary card at the top of stack 107 to determine the cause of the error. If the difference between the values on the two summary cards equals the difference between the final total of the tabulator accumulator and the total in the punch accumulator it may be assumed the error is corrected and the new summary card replaces the original one.
