An inextensible breaker structure of a pneumatic tyre having a carcase of one or more plies of parallel rubberized threads cords or wires disposed in, or at an angle not exceeding 10 degrees to, radial planes containing the tyre axis, comprises one or more superposed pairs of superposed layers or juxtaposed layer sections, of substantially inextensible rubberized threads, cords or wires laid side by side in the layers, or each layer section, at an angle to the midcircumferential plane of the tyre with those in the overlying layer or layer sections crossing, and being individually continuous at each edge with, those of the overlain layer or layer sections. As shown in Fig. 3, a breaker strip may be formed by flattening a tube built up from a helical winding of a group of parallel cords, or a cord fabric strip, so that a double layer strip is formed with the lateral ends of the cords in each layer integrally connected with the ends of the corresponding, oppositely directed, cords in the other layer. One or more superposed turns of such double-layer strip may be spirally wound on the tyre carcase to provide the breaker structure. Fig. 6 shows an arrangement whereing the breaker structure is formed from a strip of longitudinal parallel cords, or cord fabric, obliquely bent upon itself in zig-zag fashion to provide a series of half-lapped parallelograms, the cords of each of which are oppositely directed to, and integrally connected with, the cords of adjacent parallelograms. A similar arrangement may alternatively be achieved by a progressive winding of a continuous cord, or group of cords laid zig-zag fashion across the carcase crown, or on a collapsible former, as shown in Fig. 7, one or more complete windings being effected as desired.
