A method and an apparatus for controlling a backlight of an LCD are provided to increase the life of a backlight of an LCD by reducing a backlight current when it is not necessary. An LCD module outputs a signal applied from the outside. A determination unit(111) detects at least one of a vertical synchronizing signal(Vsync) and a horizontal synchronizing signal(Hsync) to determine whether a signal is applied from the outside or not. When a signal is not applied from the outside, the determination unit checks the time when a signal is not applied. When the checked time is more than the predetermined time, a control unit(107) decreases a current value applied to a backlight of the LCD module below a predetermined level. The signal applied form the outside is a digital broadcast signal or an A/V(Audio/Video) signal inputted from an external device. |
