An artificial leather that feels like natural leather and a substrate for artificial leather are provided at low cost. A method for manufacturing the substrate for artificial leather includes the following: laminating an upper layer web, a fabric, and a lower layer web in the indicated order; subjecting the resultant laminate to hydroentanglement to form a non-woven fabric; and impregnating the non-woven fabric with an elastic polymer solution. The upper layer web is obtained by wet papermaking and drying, and includes a group of fibers having a fineness of 1 denier or less, a fiber length of 3 to 15 mm, and a basis weight of 20 to 150 g/m 2 and a water-soluble polymer. The fabric includes fibers having a fineness of 1 denier or more and has an air permeability of 3 to 250 cm 3 /cm 2 ·sec based on JIS L 1096 Method A. The lower layer web is obtained by wet papermaking and drying, and includes a group of fibers having a fineness greater than that of the upper layer web, a fiber length of 5 to 25 mm, and a basis weight of 50 to 200 g/m 2 and a water-soluble polymer filled into the lower layer web at a density higher than that of the upper layer web. |
