The arrangement has a clamping device (10) for clamping a workpiece (1). A mechanical guiding prism (50) is provided for contacting the workpiece at contact points (71,72) of a cross-sectional contour of the workpiece. An optical sensor (40) determines the position of the guiding prism and produces contour data based on the determined position. The guiding prism and the clamping device are rotated relative to each other such that the contact points are maintained along the cross-sectional contour of the workpiece. A processing unit processes the contour data. An independent claim is also included for a method for producing contour data of a cross-sectional contour of an elongated, cylindrical steel e.g. round steel, workpiece.
