PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cutting insert which can excellently carry out a cutting operation by reducing cutting resistance, and also can reduce a service cost by using many cutting edges as a main cutting edge in order. SOLUTION: The cutting insert 10 is mounted on the cutting tool for carrying out a surface machining operation on a workpiece, and has two octagonal shape planes 11 having the outer shape of an octagonal flat plate shape and side surfaces perpendicular to the two octagonal shape planes 11. Cutting edges 13 are provided at the intersecting ridge portions of the octagonal shape planes 11 and the side surfaces. Chip breaker grooves 14 are provided inside the cutting edges 13 so as to recede from the octagonal shape planes 11. Flat land portions 18 are provided on the octagonal shape planes 11 so as to elongate from the central portion of the octagonal shape planes 11 toward the respective corner portions so as to divide the chip breaker grooves 14. The chip breaker grooves 14 have tilting surfaces tilting so as to recede from the octagonal shape planes 11 with the distance from the flat land portions 18 as viewes from the side opposed to the side surfaces.
